Owaisi's Controversial Slogan Expunged from Parliament Records
Asaduddin Owaisi's slogans during his oath in the 18th Lok Sabha were expunged following uproar from treasury benches
26-06-2024The controversial slogans chanted by AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi after taking his oath as a member of the 18th Lok Sabha on Tuesday have been expunged from Parliament records. The decision came after uproar from the treasury benches.
Radha Mohan Singh, presiding over the session, assured members that only the oath itself would be recorded. Pro tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab confirmed that any slogans used by newly elected MPs during the ceremony would be expunged from the record.
Owaisi, who was sworn in for the fifth time, later took to social media platform X to affirm his commitment to raising issues of India's marginalized communities with sincerity.
During Owaisi's oath, BJP MPs chanted "Jai Shri Ram." Undeterred, Owaisi completed his oath in Urdu and concluded with his controversial slogan, which sparked immediate backlash.
In response to the controversy, Owaisi argued there was no constitutional provision prohibiting his actions. "How is it wrong? Tell me the provisions of the Constitution? You should also listen to what others said. I said what I had to," he stated outside Parliament.
Union Minister G Kishan Reddy criticized Owaisi's slogan as "absolutely wrong" and contrary to constitutional values. "On one hand, he is taking an oath in the name of the Constitution and, on the other, giving a slogan against the Constitution. The real face of Owaisi is out. Every day, they raise issues against the country and the Constitution," Reddy remarked.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju added, "We do not support or oppose any country, but it is not right to take the name of any country in the House."
Owaisi had secured his seat by defeating BJP candidate Madhavi Latha by 3.3 lakh votes in the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
