2008 Mumbai Attacks Accused Tahawwur Rana Extradited to India, NIA to Lead Probe
Tahawwur Rana, accused of aiding the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, is being extradited from the US to India and will be in NIA custody for investigation
09-04-2025Tahawwur Rana, accused of involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, is being extradited from the United States to India and is expected to land early tomorrow morning, according to sources quoted by India Today TV. A team of top intelligence and investigative officers is accompanying him on the flight.
In anticipation of his arrival, authorities have implemented tight security measures at two separate prison facilities in Delhi and Mumbai. According to senior government officials, Rana will initially be in the custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which will lead the interrogation and investigation in the coming weeks.
The extradition is being directly monitored by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval along with key personnel from the NIA and the Ministry of Home Affairs, sources added.
Rana, a businessman of Pakistani origin who holds Canadian citizenship, is believed to be linked to the terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). He allegedly assisted David Coleman Headley (also known as Dawood Gilani), a Pakistani-American operative, in obtaining travel documents. Headley later conducted reconnaissance missions across Mumbai, identifying several of the eventual attack sites.
Reports indicate that Rana himself was present in Mumbai between November 11 and 21, 2008, having flown in from Dubai. During his stay at Hotel Renaissance in Powai, he is suspected to have reviewed plans and preparations for the assault.
Just five days after his departure, on November 26, 2008, LeT gunmen launched coordinated strikes across Mumbai, killing more than 170 people. Ajmal Kasab, the only attacker caught alive during the siege, was later convicted and executed.
India had requested Rana’s provisional arrest in June 2020, beginning the legal proceedings for his extradition. In February this year, former US President Donald Trump publicly supported the move, saying Rana would “go to India and face justice.”
Earlier this month, the US Supreme Court rejected Rana's plea to halt his extradition. He has been held at the Metropolitan Detention Centre in Los Angeles ahead of his transfer to Indian custody.
