A powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck near Taiwan's eastern city of Hualien, marking the second significant quake within 24 hours
16-08-2024A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck 34 km (21 miles) off the eastern coast of Taiwan near the city of Hualien on Friday, according to the island's weather administration. This is the second significant quake to hit the region in less than 24 hours.
The tremor was felt in the capital, Taipei, where buildings shook, although subway services continued to operate at reduced speeds. The quake occurred at a depth of 9.7 km.
This latest seismic activity follows a 5.7 magnitude earthquake that struck off Taiwan's northeastern coast late on Thursday.
Located near the convergence of two tectonic plates, Taiwan frequently experiences earthquakes. In April, the island was hit by its most powerful earthquake in 25 years, which resulted in nine deaths and injured over 900 people.
