7-Minute Lung Cancer Injection Launched in India, Each Dose Priced at ₹3.7 Lakh

India has introduced a rapid immunotherapy injection for lung cancer patients, marking a notable development in cancer care. The treatment, branded as Tecentriq, has been rolled out by Roche Pharma India and is designed to significantly cut down administration time compared to conventional intravenous infusions.

Unlike traditional IV immunotherapy that can take hours in a hospital setting, this new formulation is delivered subcutaneously — just beneath the skin — and can be completed in approximately seven minutes. It is intended for patients diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), the most common type of lung cancer in the country.

How the Drug Works

The medicine contains atezolizumab, an immunotherapy agent that targets a protein known as PD-L1. Cancer cells often use PD-L1 as a shield to avoid detection by the immune system. By blocking this protein, the drug enables the body’s immune defenses to recognise and attack tumour cells more effectively.

Medical experts say the therapy is particularly beneficial for patients whose tumours show high PD-L1 expression. In suitable candidates, it may slow disease progression and improve survival outcomes. Depending on clinical assessment, the treatment can be administered alone or alongside other cancer therapies.

What Sets It Apart

The primary advantage of the new injection lies in its speed and convenience. Patients receiving immunotherapy through IV drips typically spend several hours at oncology centres during each session. The shorter administration time is expected to ease hospital congestion, reduce patient fatigue and improve overall treatment experience — especially for elderly individuals and those travelling long distances for care.

Oncologists also believe that the simplified process could enhance adherence to treatment schedules, as shorter hospital visits reduce physical and emotional strain.

Affordability Remains a Major Hurdle

Despite the medical benefits, the cost of the injection has sparked debate. Each dose is priced at roughly ₹3.7 lakh, and patients may require multiple doses — often around six — depending on their treatment plan. This pushes total expenses into several lakhs of rupees, making it inaccessible for many families.

Immunotherapy drugs are typically expensive due to the extensive research, development and manufacturing processes involved. In India, advanced immunotherapy cycles frequently range between ₹1.5 lakh and ₹4 lakh per session.

To help ease the financial burden, Roche has introduced a patient support initiative named “Blue Tree.” Additionally, the treatment has been brought under the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS), which may provide reimbursement assistance for eligible beneficiaries.

A Step Forward in Cancer Care

While pricing concerns persist, healthcare professionals describe the seven-minute injection as an important advancement in oncology treatment. By combining shorter administration time with targeted immune-based therapy, the innovation could improve comfort and quality of life for many lung cancer patients in India.
