It has been more than ten years since British-Indian billionaire Sanjay Hinduja, chairman of Gulf Oil International Limited and a key figure in the Hinduja Group’s real estate ventures, tied the knot with designer Anusuya Mahtani in one of India’s most extravagant weddings.
The couple’s 2015 wedding in Udaipur’s Jagmandir Island Palace remains etched in memory for its scale and opulence. Reportedly costing around ₹150 crore, the multi-day celebration featured over 16,000 guests, lavish décor, and star-studded performances by international icons Jennifer Lopez and Nicole Scherzinger.
Pre-Wedding Extravaganza in Mumbai
Before the grand Udaipur celebration, the festivities began in Mumbai with two glittering pre-wedding parties. The first, held at Hinduja’s Juhu bungalow, saw the presence of top politicians such as Devendra Fadnavis, Uddhav Thackeray, and Shaina NC. Guests were treated to an elaborate menu featuring dishes from nearly 18 different countries.
The second party, hosted at the Taj Mahal Palace, drew around 3,000 attendees, including Bollywood stars Madhuri Dixit, Anil Kapoor, and Rishi Kapoor. Despite the grandeur, the menu remained strictly vegetarian and alcohol-free, adhering to family traditions.
Udaipur Pre-Wedding Festivities
Once in Udaipur, the celebrations continued with a string of traditional and musical events. The highlight was the sangeet on 10 February 2015, held at the stunning Taj Lake Palace.
Pop star Nicole Scherzinger lit up the evening with a performance to the Bollywood hit Tune Maari Entriyaan, dancing alongside Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor. Reports suggested she charged around ₹40 lakh for her appearance.
The Grand Wedding at Jagmandir Island Palace
The wedding itself was a spectacle of luxury and heritage. The couple’s Sindhi-style ceremony was attended by thousands of guests, including Bollywood celebrities such as Shilpa Shetty, Preity Zinta, Malaika Arora, Ranveer Singh, and Raveena Tandon.
Fashion designers Manish Malhotra and Tarun Tahiliani designed the couple’s ensembles, with reports estimating their combined wedding attire at a staggering ₹10 crore.
The showstopper of the night was Jennifer Lopez, who reportedly performed for ₹6.5 crore. Accompanied by her then-partner Casper Smart, she stayed at the Kohinoor Suite of The Oberoi Udaivilas, which costs around ₹3 lakh per night.
The logistics behind the event were equally jaw-dropping — 208 chartered flights were arranged for guests at a cost of ₹20 crore, while hundreds of BMWs with private chauffeurs ferried attendees across the city.
Remembering Gopichand Hinduja
Sanjay Hinduja’s father, Gopichand Hinduja, who was a pillar of the family business empire, passed away in London at the age of 85 earlier this week. His passing marks the end of an era for one of the most influential business families in the world.
