An Air India flight traveling from Chicago to Delhi was forced to turn back mid-journey after a majority of its onboard toilets became unusable, the airline confirmed on Monday. The issue arose when passengers flushed inappropriate items such as polythene bags, fabric pieces, and other waste, causing severe blockages.

According to Air India, eight out of the 12 lavatories on the aircraft were affected—contrary to initial reports that suggested 11 were out of service. The airline explained that since European airports along the route had night-time operational restrictions, the flight had no viable diversion option and had to return to Chicago.

"We acknowledge the inconvenience caused to our passengers on AI126 from Chicago to Delhi on March 5, 2025, due to non-functional lavatories, which led to the flight’s return to Chicago O’Hare International Airport," the airline stated, expressing regret over the situation.

The problem became evident one hour and forty-five minutes into the flight, while the aircraft was flying over the Atlantic Ocean. Air India emphasized that the decision to turn back was made in the interest of passenger comfort and safety.

Aviation website View From The Wing reported that the flight was compelled to return approximately four-and-a-half hours after takeoff, when it was over Greenland. The journey back took just as long, resulting in a nearly 10-hour ordeal for passengers.

Following the incident, Air India revealed that previous investigations have found a range of improper items, including blankets, diapers, and undergarments, being flushed in lavatories on other flights as well. The airline urged travelers to use onboard restrooms appropriately to avoid similar disruptions in the future.
