In response to the escalating unrest in Bangladesh, Air India announced on Monday the immediate suspension of its flights to and from Dhaka. The airline has also introduced a one-time waiver for rescheduling or cancellation charges for passengers affected by the disruption.

Air India emphasized its commitment to passenger and crew safety, stating, "In view of the emerging situation in Bangladesh, we have cancelled the scheduled operation of our flights to and from Dhaka with immediate effect. We are continuously monitoring the situation and are extending support to our passengers with confirmed bookings for travel to and from Dhaka with a one-time waiver on rescheduling and cancellation charges. The safety of our guests and crew remains our foremost priority. For more information, please call our 24/7 Contact Centre at 011-69329333 / 011-69329999."

The decision follows a period of intense violence in Bangladesh, which has resulted in over 300 deaths and prompted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee the country. The unrest began over a quota system for government jobs and intensified on July 16 when student activists clashed with security forces and pro-government groups. The authorities responded with tear gas, rubber bullets, and a curfew, including a shoot-on-sight order. Internet and mobile data services were also shut down.

Protesters recently stormed Hasina's official residence, Ganabhaban, in Dhaka, looting and vandalizing the premises. Sheikh Hasina, who had taken office for the fifth time in January of this year, left Bangladesh amidst the chaos, and an interim government is set to take charge.

Air India's suspension of flights and the introduced waivers reflect the airline's prioritization of safety amid the volatile situation in Bangladesh.
