10-08-2024A tragic plane crash near São Paulo, Brazil, has claimed the lives of all 61 people on board. The regional turboprop aircraft, en route to São Paulo, went down in a residential area close to Vinhedo on Friday.
Video footage circulating on social media captured the ATR-manufactured plane spiraling out of control before it plummeted into a wooded area near a housing complex, followed by a towering column of black smoke.
Authorities in Valinhos, near Vinhedo, confirmed that there were no survivors. Remarkably, only one house in the nearby neighborhood sustained damage, and no residents were injured.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, speaking at an event shortly after the incident, shared the devastating news and called for a moment of silence to honor the victims. "I must convey some very sad news," the president announced.
The aircraft, operated by Voepass, had departed from Cascavel in the state of Paraná and was heading to São Paulo's Guarulhos International Airport when it crashed about 50 miles northwest of its destination.
Initially, Voepass reported that the plane was carrying 58 passengers and four crew members, but the airline later revised the number to 57 on its website.
Voepass, a privately-held airline, stated that it could not yet provide details on the cause of the crash. The plane, identified as an ATR 72-500 turboprop with the registration PS-VPB, is produced by a joint venture between Airbus and the Italian aerospace company Leonardo.
Following the crash, São Paulo's state fire department quickly dispatched seven teams to the crash site.
