In a recent order, the Allahabad High Court remarked that messages such as "dekhte hi goli maar di jayegi" (will be shot at sight) and "trespassers will be shot" displayed on signboards outside defence installations are inappropriate. Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav emphasized that such stern warnings have a negative impact, especially on passers-by, including children, and advised caution in their usage.
The court made this observation while granting bail to a Nepalese man accused of illegally entering the Manauri Air Force Station in Prayagraj while intoxicated in February this year. The man faced charges under various sections, including the Official Secrets Act and IPC. He asserted that his entry was unintentional, and no incriminating items were found in his possession.
Previously, the High Court had questioned the necessity of such signage. In response, the Centre explained that defence forces employ comprehensive security measures to safeguard their installations from intrusion and unauthorized access, including perimeter security, manned entry and exit points, fencing, and cautionary boards.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) highlighted in its affidavit that security measures were intensified following terrorist attacks on Pathankot and Uri Army Bases. Despite the need for heightened security, the court emphasized the importance of using less intimidating language on warning signs to prevent unnecessary fear and anxiety among the public.
