Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital on Saturday, April 11, after experiencing a cardiac arrest. The veteran artiste, aged 92, is currently under medical supervision in the hospital’s emergency care unit.

Hospital authorities confirmed that she was brought in following the cardiac episode and is being closely monitored. Her granddaughter, Zanai Bhosle, shared an update on social media, requesting privacy for the family. She stated that the singer had been dealing with extreme fatigue and a chest infection, and assured well-wishers that treatment is ongoing.

A Career Defined by Range and Reinvention

Over several decades, Asha Bhosle has carved an extraordinary place in Indian music with her unmatched versatility. From evocative ghazals to energetic dance numbers, she consistently redefined playback singing in Hindi cinema.

Her collaboration with composer O. P. Nayyar produced memorable melodies such as Aao Huzoor Tumko, while her work with R. D. Burman gave audiences evergreen classics like Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko. Songs such as Piya Tu Ab Toh Aaja and Yeh Mera Dil showcased her bold vocal style, reshaping the soundscape of film music.

At the same time, she demonstrated remarkable command over traditional compositions in tracks like In Aankhon Ki Masti and Dil Cheez Kya Hai, further establishing her musical depth.

Reinventing Herself in the Modern Era

The 1990s and early 2000s saw another successful chapter in her journey. Teaming up with composer A. R. Rahman, she delivered popular songs such as Tanha Tanha and Rangeela Re, which introduced her voice to a younger generation. She also made her mark in the Indipop space with chart-topping collaborations that expanded her appeal beyond film music.

National Recognition

Asha Bhosle’s immense contribution to Indian music has been recognised with some of the country’s highest honours. She was conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008. In addition, she received two National Film Award honours for her performances in films such as Umrao Jaan and Ijaazat.

As admirers across generations await further updates, tributes continue to pour in for one of India’s most celebrated and enduring musical legends.
