Asma al-Assad, the wife of Syria's former president Bashar al-Assad, has reportedly filed for divorce, expressing dissatisfaction with her life in Moscow, where the family has been granted asylum. She is said to be seeking permission to relocate to her hometown of London.

Asma, born in London to Syrian parents, moved to Syria in 2000 and married Bashar al-Assad that same year. Now 49, she has submitted her divorce petition to a Russian court and requested special permission to leave Moscow, with her request currently under review by Russian authorities.

Earlier this month, after the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime to rebels, the family sought asylum in Moscow. Bashar, who served as president for 24 years, is reportedly facing severe restrictions in Russia, including an inability to leave Moscow or engage in political activities. His assets have also been frozen, including substantial sums of money and properties.

Reports also state that Bashar's brother, Maher al-Assad, has not been granted asylum in Russia and is under house arrest while his asylum application is being reviewed.
