Bajrang Punia Banned for Four Years After Refusing Doping Test
Olympic medalist Bajrang Punia has been suspended for four years by NADA for declining a doping test, citing trust issues with expired testing kits
27-11-2024Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Bajrang Punia has been handed a four-year suspension by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) after declining to provide a urine sample during national team selection trials on March 10, 2024. The penalty, imposed under Article 10.3.1 of NADA’s Anti-Doping Rules, sidelines Bajrang from all competitive wrestling and coaching opportunities for the duration of the ban.
The case began with a provisional suspension placed on Bajrang on April 23, 2024, followed by a suspension issued by the United World Wrestling (UWW). However, Bajrang successfully appealed against the initial provisional suspension, which NADA’s Anti-Disciplinary Doping Panel (ADDP) lifted on May 31, 2024. This relief was short-lived, as NADA formally charged him on June 23, 2024. Following a series of hearings in September and October, the ADDP finalized the four-year suspension, backdated to start from April 23, 2024.
Disqualification and Rationale
The ADDP clarified that the period during which the provisional suspension was lifted—from May 31 to June 21—would not count toward the total ineligibility period. This means Bajrang is barred from all wrestling activities until 2028.
Bajrang explained his refusal to provide a sample, citing concerns about expired testing kits and alleged procedural lapses by NADA. "It wasn’t outright refusal," Bajrang argued, "but I wanted clarity from NADA regarding the use of expired kits before proceeding with the test."
He also linked the situation to his involvement in protests against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the former president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), claiming that his case was handled with bias.
NADA’s Position
NADA dismissed Bajrang’s defense, describing his actions as a clear violation of anti-doping regulations. "The refusal to provide a urine sample was both intentional and deliberate," NADA stated, asserting that the athlete had disregarded his responsibilities under the agency’s rules.
Broader Implications
The case has highlighted trust issues between athletes and anti-doping authorities. Bajrang’s ban raises questions about procedural fairness in testing protocols and the relationship between sports governance and athletes.
With the suspension now official, Bajrang faces the loss of key years in his wrestling career and a potential obstacle in pursuing future roles as an international coach.
