In a dramatic result in Nepal’s general election, Balendra Shah delivered a decisive defeat to former prime minister K. P. Sharma Oli in the key Jhapa District constituency.

According to official results announced by the Election Commission of Nepal, Shah secured 68,348 votes, far ahead of Oli, the chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), who received 18,734 votes. The final margin of victory was 49,614 votes.

The result marks one of the most significant upsets in the country’s recent political history. The constituency had attracted national attention because Shah, a leading figure of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, was projected as the party’s candidate for prime minister.

Early counting trends released by the election body indicated that the Rastriya Swatantra Party was heading towards a majority in Nepal’s 275-seat House of Representatives.

The election took place on March 5, only six months after widespread protests forced the Oli-led government out of office. The demonstrations, which erupted in September 2025, resulted in the deaths of at least 77 people.

The unrest was largely driven by younger citizens, particularly Gen Z protesters. What initially began as opposition to a temporary social media ban soon grew into a broader movement against corruption, economic difficulties and long-standing political elites.

The Jhapa-5 contest had been closely monitored because Oli had previously won the same seat in the 2022 parliamentary election, defeating Khagendra Adhikari of the Nepali Congress by more than 28,000 votes. Shah’s overwhelming win therefore represents a significant shift in voter sentiment and highlights rising support for newer political forces.

Before entering national politics, Shah had gained prominence after winning the 2022 mayoral election in Kathmandu Metropolitan City as an independent candidate. He served as mayor until January 2026, when he resigned to pursue a national political role and soon joined the Rastriya Swatantra Party.

Born on April 27, 1990, in Kathmandu, Shah belongs to the Madhesi community, whose roots are in Nepal’s southern plains near the Indian border. His family originally came from Mahottari District before settling in the capital.

From Rapper to Rising Political Figure

Before entering politics, Shah was widely recognised in Nepal’s music industry as a hip-hop artist and producer. Performing under the name “Balen,” he began releasing music in 2012.

Many of his songs highlighted issues such as corruption, weak governance and urban challenges, themes that later became central to his political messaging.

Shah also has an academic background in engineering. He earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the Himalayan WhiteHouse Institute of Technology and later completed a master’s degree in structural engineering at Visvesvaraya Technological University.

Following the devastating 2015 Gorkha Earthquake, he participated in rescue operations and structural assessments, helping evaluate damaged buildings and infrastructure.

Throughout the election campaign, Shah promised to combat corruption and increase the participation of young people in governance. His message resonated strongly with younger voters, particularly millennials and Gen Z, many of whom have been calling for sweeping political change in the country.
