Bangladeshi Folk Singer Rahul Anando's Residence Attacked Amid Ongoing Violence
Popular folk singer Rahul Anando's historic residence in Dhaka was vandalized and set ablaze as violence against Hindu minorities surged in Bangladesh
07-08-2024Amid escalating violence and student protests in Bangladesh, the residence of renowned folk singer Rahul Anando in Dhaka was vandalized, looted, and set on fire. Anando, known for his role in the popular folk band 'Joler Gaan,' was reportedly away with his family during the attack, which saw the historic 140-year-old house being severely damaged.
The residence, a significant cultural landmark, was frequently visited by music enthusiasts and was even featured in French President Emmanuel Macron’s Bangladesh tour in September 2023. Although the house was a rental and did not belong to Anando personally, it housed a vast collection of over 3,000 musical instruments, many of which were crafted by the singer himself.
According to Saiful Ismal Jarnal, a founding member of 'Joler Gaan,' Anando and his family sought refuge in a secure location following the incident. The attack is part of a broader wave of violence targeting Hindu communities and properties amid widespread unrest and protests over a contentious quota system in the country.
