The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faced a significant setback in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections with losses in key constituencies, including Uttar Pradesh's Faizabad and Shravasti, despite the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya—a major campaign point for the party.

In Faizabad, home to the Ram Mandir, the BJP's Lallu Singh was defeated by the Samajwadi Party's (SP) Awadhesh Prasad. This loss was particularly notable as Faizabad has been a BJP stronghold since 2014, with Lallu Singh serving as the MP.

Similarly, in Shravasti, Saket Misra, son of Nripendra Misra (the bureaucrat overseeing the Ram Temple construction), lost to SP's Ram Shiromani Verma. Shravasti, located just 100 kilometers from Faizabad, is significant not only for its political implications but also for its historical and cultural importance.

One of the BJP's primary strategies in the 2024 election was leveraging the Ram Janmabhoomi temple project. Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself participated in the pran pratishtha ceremony of the Ram Lalla idol on January 22, signaling the party's commitment to the project. Political analysts had predicted that the Ram Mandir would boost the BJP's electoral performance. However, the defeats in Faizabad and Shravasti suggest otherwise.

Shravasti holds cultural and historical significance as the site of Mahatma Buddha's penance and numerous miracles. It is also linked to the political legacy of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who represented the region when it was part of the Balrampur constituency. Vajpayee was elected from Balrampur in 1957 and again in 1967, with Shravasti inheriting the area after the 2008 delimitation.

Despite the BJP's efforts and the symbolic importance of the Ram Mandir, the losses to the SP candidates underscore the complex political landscape and the challenges the party faces. These results highlight the need for the BJP to reassess its strategies as it moves forward.
