BJP Warns Brij Bhushan Singh Against Further Comments on Wrestlers' Allegations
The BJP has advised former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh to refrain from making statements about wrestlers amid ongoing sexual harassment allegations
08-09-2024The BJP has advised former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh to refrain from making any further statements regarding wrestlers, according to sources. Singh, a former BJP MP, is facing allegations of sexual harassment from several prominent Indian athletes, including Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik.
Singh has dismissed the accusations as a political conspiracy orchestrated by the Congress, pointing to Phogat and fellow wrestler Bajrang Punia joining the Congress ahead of the Haryana assembly elections. He accused former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Hooda and Congress leadership of using Phogat and Punia as "pawns" in their scheme to target the Wrestling Federation and the BJP.
Singh first gained control of the WFI in 2012 following a contentious power struggle with Hooda. Recently, following his remarks against the wrestlers, the BJP reportedly urged Singh to avoid further controversy. The party is wary of reigniting tensions linked to the wrestlers' protests, which had garnered significant support in Haryana, a state known for producing many of India's top athletes.
In response to the allegations against him, the BJP opted not to field Singh as a candidate in the recent Lok Sabha elections, instead nominating his son, Karan Bhushan Singh, who secured a victory in Kaiserganj by a margin of over 1.48 lakh votes.
Meanwhile, Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia remain committed to their fight against Singh. Phogat, a two-time world championship medalist and Asiad gold winner, announced her intention to contest from the Julana constituency. Punia, on the other hand, has taken up the role of working chairman of the All India Kisan Congress.
