Support from the Hindi film industry has poured in for actor-comedian Rajpal Yadav, who recently reported to Tihar Jail after the Delhi High Court refused to grant him more time in a cheque bounce case tied to an old film loan.
According to his manager, Goldie, prominent names such as Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, Sonu Sood, and Gurmeet Chaudhary have extended assistance. Filmmaker David Dhawan and his son Varun Dhawan have also reached out with financial backing. Punjabi singer Guru Randhawa publicly urged fans and industry members to help, committing advance payment from an upcoming project. Music executive Rao Inderjeet Singh Yadav has reportedly pledged over Rs 1 crore to aid the actor.
Goldie stated that many individuals from the industry have stepped up during this difficult phase and that Rajpal deeply appreciates the solidarity. While financial commitments have been made, he noted that such arrangements take time to materialize.
Background of the case:
The legal dispute dates back to 2010, when Rajpal Yadav borrowed funds to produce his directorial venture Ata Pata Laapata. After the film underperformed, repayment delays, interest, and penalties reportedly escalated the debt to nearly Rs 9 crore. Multiple repayment cheques issued by the actor were later dishonoured, leading to criminal proceedings under financial laws.
Earlier this month, the Delhi High Court ordered Yadav to surrender after finding repeated non-compliance with prior commitments. Although his legal team offered partial payment and proposed a revised repayment plan, the court declined to withdraw the surrender directive, stating that professional status could not justify special treatment.
Rajpal Yadav has since begun serving a six-month sentence at Tihar Jail, where authorities confirmed that routine legal procedures were followed.
The actor was recently seen in Baby John and Interrogation, and is slated to appear in the upcoming horror-comedy Bhoot Bangla, starring Akshay Kumar, scheduled for release in April.
