The Bombay High Court on Thursday issued a restraint order against the film "Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar," preventing its makers from using Bollywood director and producer Karan Johar's name and likeness in the film's title. The court ruled that this unauthorized use infringed upon Johar's fundamental rights.

The film was slated for release on Friday.

Justice Riyaz Chagla decreed that the film could not be shown in theaters or on social media platforms until all references to Johar's name and attributes were removed. Johar's legal team argued that his name was being exploited without his consent, with the intent of achieving unjust financial gain.

Johar requested a permanent injunction and restraining order against the producers, IndiaPride Advisory and Sanjay Singh, as well as the writer-director Bablu Singh, to prevent them from using his name in the film’s title.

Justice Chagla pointed out that the film's title and trailer unmistakably referred to Johar, a prominent celebrity and successful filmmaker. The bench emphasized that unauthorized use of someone's name or likeness constitutes a violation of their fundamental rights.

Despite being notified, the filmmakers did not appear in court. Justice Chagla highlighted their non-response and upheld Johar’s personal rights. The court concluded that Johar had a strong case for protecting his rights and prohibited the filmmakers from unlawfully using his name.

Further hearings are scheduled for July 10.
