Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes has ordered Elon Musk to appoint a legal representative for his social media platform X in Brazil within 24 hours, warning that failure to comply could result in the platform being suspended in the country. The court's decision was made public on Wednesday.
Earlier in the month, X, formerly known as Twitter, announced plans to shut down its operations in Brazil and lay off its staff, citing concerns over "censorship orders" from Justice Moraes. Despite this, the platform stated that its services would still be accessible to users in Brazil.
In a bold move, the Brazilian Supreme Court shared a screenshot of its decision on its official X account, tagging both Musk and X's Global Government Affairs account.
Justice Moraes emphasized in his ruling that according to Brazil's internet regulations, companies that fail to comply with the country's laws, including those protecting the confidentiality of personal data, could face temporary suspension of their operations.
As of now, X has not responded to the court's decision.
