In response to the recent and shocking rape and murder case in Kolkata, the Union Home Ministry has mandated that all states submit law and order reports every two hours. This directive, which applies to police forces nationwide, requires updates to be sent via email, fax, or WhatsApp to the Ministry's control room in New Delhi, starting from 4 PM on August 16, 2024.
This action comes after widespread protests erupted following the brutal assault and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Her semi-naked body was discovered on August 9 in a seminar hall at the hospital. The day after, police arrested Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, in connection with the crime. The case has since been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by the Calcutta High Court.
As part of the investigation, Roy is set to undergo a psychoanalysis test, with experts from Delhi's Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) arriving in Kolkata to assist.
The incident has ignited a nationwide call for justice, with protesting doctors demanding significant reforms. Their demands include improving the working and living conditions of resident doctors and implementing a central law to protect healthcare professionals from violence in the workplace.
