The X account of the rapidly trending “Cockroach Janta Party” (CJP) was restricted in India on Thursday, just hours after the online movement crossed the BJP’s official Instagram follower count.

The development was announced by the group’s founder, Abhijeet Dipke, who shared a screenshot indicating that the account had been withheld within India. Responding to the action, Dipke remarked that the move was “expected.”

The account restriction comes amid an extraordinary surge in popularity for the meme-driven campaign, which has rapidly evolved from an internet satire project into a wider online youth movement discussing issues such as unemployment, examination paper leaks and political accountability.

CJP Overtakes BJP on Instagram

The controversy intensified after the Cockroach Janta Party reportedly crossed 10 million followers on Instagram, moving ahead of the official handle of Bharatiya Janata Party, which currently has fewer followers on the platform. The Congress party continues to maintain a larger audience online, while the Aam Aadmi Party trails behind.

Positioning itself as a youth-centric digital political platform, the CJP describes itself with the tongue-in-cheek slogan: “Secular, Socialist, Democratic, Lazy.” Its rapid rise has largely been driven by humour-heavy posts, viral memes and politically charged satire that resonated strongly with Gen Z users.

Origin of the “Cockroach” Name

The name of the movement emerged after controversial remarks attributed to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant during a recent court hearing. Comments comparing certain unemployed youth and activists to “cockroaches” and “parasites” triggered widespread online criticism and became the emotional catalyst for the campaign, according to Dipke.

The Chief Justice later clarified that his observations were being misinterpreted and said the remarks were directed only at individuals allegedly using fake qualifications. However, the clarification did little to slow the online backlash or the momentum behind the satirical movement.

Who Is Abhijeet Dipke?

Dipke, a Boston University graduate and former social media campaign worker associated with the Aam Aadmi Party, has described the movement as more than a passing meme trend. He argues that it reflects growing frustration among young Indians over economic uncertainty, employment concerns and institutional trust.

Within days of its emergence, the campaign claimed to have gathered lakhs of supporters and millions of followers across social media platforms.

The movement has also drawn reactions from several prominent public figures, including activist-lawyer Prashant Bhushan, social activist Anjali Bhardwaj and All India Trinamool Congress MPs Mahua Moitra and Kirti Azad, some of whom jokingly expressed support online.

Satire Mixed With Political Messaging

Although humorous in tone, the group’s manifesto also includes serious policy suggestions. These include proposals for stronger Election Commission accountability, reservations for women in Parliament and Cabinet positions, restrictions on post-retirement appointments for former Chief Justices, and reforms linked to employment and media ownership.

The movement has additionally attempted to position itself as a voice for students and young professionals affected by controversies such as the NEET paper leak and rising job insecurity.

Whether the Cockroach Janta Party eventually transforms into a structured political outfit or remains a large-scale internet protest campaign remains uncertain. But following the blocking of its X account and its explosive social media growth, the movement has firmly entered the centre of online political discourse in India.
