28-06-2024On Friday, the Congress party claimed that the microphone of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi was turned off as he raised concerns about the NEET paper leak in the Lok Sabha.
The Congress shared a video on X, showing Rahul Gandhi requesting Speaker Om Birla to provide him access to a microphone. Gandhi sought a debate on the NEET controversy and demanded a government statement.
In response, Speaker Om Birla clarified that he does not have the authority to switch off MPs' microphones. "The discussion should focus on the President's address. Other matters will not be recorded in the House," Birla stated.
The Congress tweeted a video, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of remaining silent on the NEET issue, while Rahul Gandhi raised the concerns of the youth in the House. They alleged a "conspiracy" to suppress the youth's voice by turning off Gandhi's mic.
The NEET-UG 2024 examination for undergraduate medical programs has become controversial due to allegations of a question paper leak, sparking nationwide protests from students.
As the session began, Congress MP KC Venugopal submitted an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha to discuss the paper leaks. However, the Speaker stated that the House would discuss the Motion of Thanks to the President's address to Parliament.
With tensions rising in the Lok Sabha, the Speaker adjourned the House until July 1. Government sources noted that it was not customary to bring an adjournment motion during the Motion of Thanks to the President's address, asserting that the government is prepared to discuss the NEET issue.
