A shocking incident unfolded late Wednesday night when Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan's Bandra residence in Mumbai was broken into by an alleged Bangladeshi national. The intruder, identified as Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, reportedly stabbed the actor six times during a confrontation. The Mumbai Police confirmed that Shehzad, who had been living in Mumbai illegally for several months, had entered the country without proper documentation.
Suspect Arrested, Investigation Underway
Deputy Commissioner of Police Dixit Gedam informed the media on Thursday that Shehzad, also known by the alias Bijoy Das, was arrested in Thane following a burglary attempt at the actor's home. "Initial investigation suggests the accused is from Bangladesh, and he has been charged under the Passport Act along with other relevant sections. He entered India illegally and had been working for a housekeeping agency in Mumbai for the past four months," said Mr. Gedam.
The police recovered evidence pointing to Shehzad’s Bangladeshi origins and are now probing further to establish his background and motives.
Sequence of Events: A Night of Terror
According to eyewitness statements, the intruder entered Saif Ali Khan's home through the fire exit at the back. The actor's maid, Junu, first spotted him and raised the alarm. When Saif confronted the man, the situation turned violent, with the intruder stabbing the actor multiple times before fleeing the scene. Both Saif and the injured maid were rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where doctors reported that they are recovering.
Nanny’s Statement Reveals Chilling Details
Eliyama Philip, the nanny for Saif's younger son, Jahangir (Jeh), provided a detailed statement to the police. She recalled hearing noises around 2 a.m. and initially assuming Kareena Kapoor Khan was checking on Jeh. However, when she saw an unfamiliar man emerging from the bathroom, she realized something was wrong.
"He entered Jeh's room, and when I approached, he gestured to me to stay silent," she stated. Armed with a wooden stick and a hexa blade, the man demanded money. "He asked for one crore rupees," Philip revealed, adding that when she tried to protect herself, the intruder attacked her, causing injuries to her hands.
Hearing the commotion, Saif and Kareena rushed to the scene. When Saif confronted the attacker, he was assaulted with the blade and a wooden object. The family managed to escape to the upper floor of their home as the intruder fled.
Mumbai's Safety Questioned
This high-profile attack has sparked outrage across the country, with many questioning Mumbai's safety. Opposition leaders and members of the film fraternity criticized the government, raising concerns about the security of ordinary citizens if even prominent figures could face such danger.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis responded, stating, "Mumbai remains one of the safest cities in the country. While isolated incidents like this are unfortunate, they should not define the city’s overall safety. We are taking all measures to ensure incidents like these are prevented."
As the investigation continues, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the vulnerabilities in urban security, even in the country's largest metropolitan area.
