27-05-2024Severe Cyclonic Storm Remal made a dramatic landfall between the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh, bringing with it winds reaching speeds of up to 135 kmph. The storm struck between Sagar Island and Khepupara, near the southwest of Mongla in Bangladesh, at 8:30 pm on Sunday. The cyclone caused torrential rains, widespread flooding, and significant destruction to homes and farmlands.
In Bangladesh, two fatalities have been reported since the cyclone's landfall, according to an official from the disaster ministry. West Bengal has, so far, reported no casualties.
Disaster management authorities and security forces across Bengal and the northeastern states were on high alert in anticipation of the storm. District administrations in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Manipur, and Mizoram were instructed to implement precautionary measures to mitigate the storm's impact.
Heavy rains caused a wall collapse in Kolkata's Bibir Bagan area, injuring one person. Extensive damage has been reported in North and South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore districts, including damage to thatched roofs, electric poles, and trees. Severe flooding was observed in low-lying areas near Kolkata.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) issued warnings for extremely heavy rainfall across Assam and other northeastern states on May 27 and 28, with Orange and Red alerts issued for various districts. Squally winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, were anticipated over south Assam and Meghalaya.
The Meghalaya government advised residents to prepare emergency kits, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay updated with weather reports. In Tripura, the government closed all educational institutions on May 27 and 28 and suspended flight operations on the Kolkata-Agartala route until Monday morning.
Cyclone Remal caused significant damage, uprooting trees, toppling electric poles, and damaging fragile dwellings. In the Sundarbans' Gosaba area, one person was injured by debris. The West Bengal government evacuated approximately 1.10 lakh people from coastal and vulnerable regions, focusing on South 24 Parganas, particularly Sagar Island, Sundarbans, and Kakdwip.
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) mobilised 15,000 civic employees for post-cyclone recovery efforts, including the rapid removal of uprooted trees. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted intensified rains and winds in southern Bengal districts. Fourteen National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed across the affected districts, including Kolkata. The state government also readied State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams for relief efforts.
Nine disaster relief teams are on standby. The Indian Navy has prepared two ships with Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) supplies and medical aid, with specialised diving and flood relief teams also on standby.
