The death toll from the massive landslides in Kerala's Wayanad district on Tuesday has surpassed 300, with rescue teams working tirelessly to find survivors trapped in the debris. As of Friday, 308 people have been confirmed dead due to the landslides, which were triggered by heavy rainfall in the hilly regions of Wayanad.

Rescue operations, now in their fourth day, have expanded to include drone-based radar technology to aid in the search for survivors. Despite facing numerous challenges, such as treacherous terrain, damaged infrastructure, and equipment shortages, rescuers continue their efforts. Over 200 people have been injured, and the difficult conditions have slowed the clearance of mud and uprooted trees.

Rescue Operations Update:

A joint rescue team consisting of the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Coast Guard, and Indian Navy is conducting searches in the affected areas. Each team includes three locals and one forest department employee. The operation has been divided into six zones:

  1. Attamala and Aaranmala
  2. Mundakkai
  3. Punjirimattam
  4. Vellarmala Village Road
  5. GVHSS Vellarmala
  6. Downstream of the Chaliyar River

Police personnel from eight nearby stations and local swimming experts are also participating in the search. Additionally, a helicopter is being used for parallel searches. The Indian Army has constructed a Bailey Bridge to facilitate the movement of 25 ambulances to Mundakkai, after the original structure was destroyed by the landslides. A drone-based radar from Delhi is expected to arrive on Saturday to assist in locating survivors.

The Coast Guard, Navy, and Forest Department officials are conducting searches along the banks of the Chaliyar River, focusing on areas where bodies may have washed up. Four additional search dogs from Tamil Nadu are joining the six already involved in the operations.

Political Leaders and International Response:

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra arrived in Wayanad to oversee the rescue efforts and meet with local officials and victims. They plan to visit heavily damaged areas, including the forest office in Mundakkai and Chooralmala. US President Joe Biden has extended his condolences to the families of the victims and praised the rescuers for their bravery and dedication.

Weather Forecast:

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rain for Wayanad and other districts in the coming days. A red alert for heavy rainfall has been issued for Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasargod districts.

While the rescue operations have saved around 1,000 people, the death toll is expected to rise as the search continues.
