Delayed Monsoon: Delhi and NCR Brace for Continued Rainfall

Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) are experiencing persistent moderate to heavy rainfall, with little relief in sight for residents. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted significant rainfall through the last week of September and into the first week of October.

This forecast aligns with projections indicating a delay in the monsoon's withdrawal from Delhi until at least early October. By early September, the capital had already surpassed both its annual and seasonal average rainfall, accumulating over 1,000 mm.

Typically, the monsoon season concludes in Delhi and surrounding areas during the last week of September. However, this year deviates from that norm, largely due to the remnants of Typhoon Yagi, which traveled from the central Pacific and is affecting North India. This unusual weather pattern has brought unexpected late monsoon showers to Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, and Uttarakhand.

Additionally, the delayed withdrawal of the monsoon from parts of Rajasthan is contributing to the extended rainy period, expected to start retreating around the end of September or early October. Overall, the monsoon's withdrawal from India may be postponed by about 10 to 15 days.

While the IMD anticipates relatively dry conditions across much of the country in the coming week, particularly in the northern plains and Northeast India, this contrasts with the recent weather patterns. Over the past week, Northwest India recorded 72 percent more rainfall than average, while southern regions saw an 86 percent decrease, highlighting the uneven distribution of rainfall this monsoon season.
