After enduring an exceptionally dry and hot May, Delhi is expected to receive some relief as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts light rain and thunderstorms for Sunday.

The day began with the city's minimum temperature recorded at 30.4 degrees Celsius, significantly above the seasonal average by 3.5 degrees. The maximum temperature is predicted to reach around 43 degrees Celsius. On Saturday, Delhi experienced a high of 44.2 degrees Celsius, which was 4.2 degrees above the average for this time of year.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 184 at 9 AM, placing it in the moderate category. To understand the scale, an AQI of zero to 50 is considered good, 51 to 100 satisfactory, 101 to 200 moderate, 201 to 300 poor, 301 to 400 very poor, and 401 to 500 severe.

Saturday's dust storm provided some temporary relief from the stifling heat. However, more consistent respite is anticipated with the forthcoming rainfall.

Rising Heatstroke Concerns

Recent data from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has revealed a disturbing increase in heatstroke-related fatalities. Since March 1, there have been 56 confirmed deaths due to heatstroke, with May accounting for 46 of these tragic incidents.

Moreover, there has been a significant number of suspected heatstroke cases, with 19,189 reported in May alone, bringing the total to 24,849 since March 1.

The NCDC data also indicated that 605 individuals have died from cardiac arrests, which may have been exacerbated by extreme heat conditions. However, in 19,192 cases, the precise cause of death remains unidentified.

As Delhi looks forward to the expected showers, residents hope for substantial relief from the recent extreme heat and improved weather conditions in the days ahead.
