Gaganpreet Kaur, the woman accused in the Delhi BMW accident that claimed the life of senior Finance Ministry official Navjot Singh and critically injured his wife, has told police she has “no recollection” of how the collision took place.
According to investigators, Kaur said she decided to take the victims to a hospital in GTB Nagar — nearly 19 km from the crash site — because she had been treated for COVID there in the past. At that moment, she reportedly panicked as her husband and young daughter, who were also in the SUV, were bleeding, and she named the only hospital that came to mind.
Police have arrested Kaur on charges of rash driving, culpable homicide, and possible destruction of evidence. The third charge emerged after it was revealed her father is a co-owner of the GTB Nagar hospital, raising concerns of potential tampering with forensic samples. While the hospital has insisted all procedures were followed, it refused to confirm Kaur’s family link.
Kaur is set to appear before a magistrate after a medical evaluation. Authorities are awaiting her toxicology report to determine whether she was under the influence of alcohol.
Additional DCP Abhimanyu Prasad confirmed that the victim’s wife is now stable. He also noted that protocol required Kaur to have informed the police and taken the injured to the nearest hospital rather than one so far away. CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts will be examined to verify allegations of overspeeding.
Sources said the BMW first hit a divider before colliding with the motorcycle carrying Navjot Singh and his wife. Visuals from the scene showed Kaur being dragged from the mangled SUV, the bike lying nearby, and Singh’s body at the spot.
Eyewitness Gulfam, along with Kaur and her husband Parikshit Makkad, helped move the victims into a taxi. However, instead of heading to the closest hospital, the group drove to GTB Nagar, where Singh was declared dead on arrival. His son, Navnoor, has alleged his father’s life could have been saved had he received immediate treatment at a local facility.
Kaur and Makkad run a garment factory in Gurugram’s Sector 37, reportedly generating over ₹50 crore in revenue.
Navjot Singh’s death has sparked outrage, with his family calling for accountability over the decision to take him to a distant hospital and concerns of evidence tampering.
