Delhi Braces for Strong Winds, Thunderstorms, and Rain Until Friday: IMD
The IMD has forecast thunderstorms, gusty winds up to 70 kmph, and scattered rainfall across Delhi and nearby states through May 31
29-05-2025People living in Delhi and nearby areas should brace for unstable weather conditions, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted thunderstorms, rain, and gusty winds—peaking at speeds up to 70 kmph—between Wednesday and Friday.
The weather bureau has stated that the national capital and surrounding regions including Haryana, Punjab, and parts of Uttar Pradesh are likely to see scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate showers, accompanied by lightning and strong winds, over the next few days.
The most severe weather is anticipated on Thursday, May 30, when thundersqualls may briefly push wind speeds up to 70 kmph in Delhi and surrounding areas.
The IMD has issued a special alert, saying, “Winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph, with gusts up to 70 kmph, are expected during thundersqualls over Delhi, Haryana, and Chandigarh on May 30.” Similar warnings apply to regions such as Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and western Rajasthan during this period.
Although surface winds in the capital will generally be light and from the southeast—typically below 10 kmph—sudden gusts during thunderstorms may lead to dangerous conditions. The public has been advised to stay indoors during intense weather, fasten loose items, and avoid standing near trees during lightning events.
Forecasts also indicate partly cloudy skies for Delhi, with occasional very light to light rain and isolated thunderstorms. Maximum daytime temperatures are expected to hover between 38°C and 40°C—slightly below the seasonal norm, providing some relief from the late-May heat.
The IMD has cautioned that this mix of wind, rain, and lightning could result in minor disruptions such as localised flooding, damage to weak structures, and delays on roads. Authorities are reportedly on high alert, with emergency teams ready to respond if needed.
As the pre-monsoon season takes shape, residents are urged to stay informed through official weather channels and take precautions during spells of severe weather.
