A late-night outing turned fatal for Shivam Gupta, a 36-year-old businessman who was allegedly assaulted by three food delivery riders in Delhi’s Connaught Place earlier this month. After battling life-threatening injuries in hospital for over two weeks, Gupta passed away on January 19.

The attack reportedly took place on the night of January 3 following a dispute. Investigators say the assailants struck Gupta repeatedly using helmets before fleeing the scene, leaving him gravely wounded on a busy street.

Police responded to an emergency call about an injured man lying on the pavement and rushed Gupta to a hospital, where doctors found severe head trauma and internal injuries. Due to his critical condition, he was unable to provide a statement that could clarify the motive behind the assault.

Gupta was transferred to another medical facility the next day, where he underwent surgery. While his family initially believed he was recovering — noting that he showed signs of responsiveness — his condition deteriorated, leading to his death days later.

Authorities have registered a case, seized the victim’s blood-stained clothing for forensic examination, and are reviewing nearby CCTV footage to piece together the sequence of events. Two suspects have been taken into custody, while efforts are ongoing to locate the third individual allegedly involved.

Gupta’s father, Anil Kant Gupta, who operates shops in Paharganj, expressed deep grief and called for strict punishment for those responsible. He recalled that his son had left home in Laxmi Nagar to attend a party the night before the incident and went unreachable shortly afterward, before police informed the family of his hospitalization.

The case has sparked renewed concern over street violence and late-night safety in Delhi’s central commercial districts.
