Delhi gears up to Vote Amid Scorching Heat: Measures Taken for Voter Comfort
Delhi voters will head to the polls on May 25, with extensive arrangements in place to combat the severe heatwave conditions forecasted
24-05-2024Delhi is bracing itself for the sixth phase of Lok Sabha elections slated for May 25, amid soaring temperatures and a severe heatwave warning issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for several states in North India, including the national capital. In response to the challenging weather conditions, authorities have put in place comprehensive measures to ensure a smooth electoral process.
Chief Electoral Officer P Krishnamurthy has spearheaded significant arrangements, including the deployment of over 1 lakh polling personnel, to mitigate the impact of the expected severe heatwave. "This is a significant day, and we have made thorough preparations," Krishnamurthy stated, underscoring meticulous planning across all facets of election management, encompassing manpower, logistics, and transport.
Given the IMD's forecast of temperatures reaching 44–45°C, special emphasis has been placed on ensuring voter comfort at polling stations. Measures include the provision of shaded areas, fully covered waiting zones equipped with coolers and fans, and the availability of drinking water, toilets, ramps, and wheelchairs for differently-abled voters. Paramedical staff will also be stationed at polling stations, equipped with basic medical kits to address any health concerns promptly.
Moreover, the electoral authorities have introduced several initiatives to enhance the voting experience and encourage voter turnout. Notable among these are the establishment of 70 pink polling stations across Delhi, managed entirely by women staff, and the operation of polling stations exclusively for persons with disabilities in each parliamentary constituency.
To facilitate voter participation, partnerships with bike-taxi aggregators have been formed to offer free rides to and from home for elderly voters. Additionally, voters will receive special coupons from food service aggregators, with various restaurants offering discounts upon displaying the voting ink.
Highlighting the significance of citizen engagement in the electoral process, Delhi CEO P Krishnamurthy has urged all registered voters to actively participate in the voting exercise on May 25, stressing the importance of their voices in shaping the outcomes of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024.
Accompanying the preparations is a detailed snapshot of Delhi's electoral roll data, revealing that a total of 1,52,01,936 individuals are eligible to cast their votes in the upcoming phase. This includes 82,12,794 male voters, 69,87,914 female voters, and 1,228 electors from the third gender. Notably, there are 2,52,038 first-time voters and 97,823 voters aged 85 and above. The voting process will span across 13,637 polling stations spread across the seven Lok Sabha constituencies of the national capital.
