Delhi Government Sets Up 24-Hour Control Room to Tackle Waterlogging After Record Rainfall
The AAP-led Delhi government has established a 24-hour control room to address waterlogging issues following the heaviest rainfall in 88 years
29-06-2024In response to the severe waterlogging caused by heavy rainfall in Delhi, the AAP-led government has established a 24-hour joint control room. Residents can report waterlogging issues via the helpline number 1800110093 or WhatsApp at 8130188222.
A high-level meeting at the Delhi Secretariat was chaired by Ministers Atishi, Saurabh Bharadwaj, Gopal Rai, and Imran Hussain, and attended by senior officials from key departments including the Public Works Department (PWD), Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), and the Delhi Jal Board.
Following the emergency meeting, PWD Minister Atishi noted that Delhi recorded 228.1 mm of rain in the past 24 hours, marking the highest single-day rainfall since 1936 and constituting 25% of the expected monsoon season's rainfall.
The intense downpour led to significant waterlogging across the city, causing drains to overflow and necessitating power cuts in certain areas to prevent electric hazards. In response, Urban Development Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj announced the establishment of a 24-hour control room at the PWD headquarters, staffed by three senior officers working in 8-hour shifts to ensure continuous monitoring. Representatives from water-related departments, including PWD, MCD, and the irrigation and flood department, will be present for effective coordination.
Departments have been instructed to check and repair pumps by 10 pm, and mobile pumps have been installed in various locations by MCD and PWD. NDMC and the Cantonment Board have been asked to review the capacity and functionality of their pumps. Quick response teams are being formed across departments to address waterlogging complaints swiftly. Additionally, traffic police, MLAs, and councillors will provide lists of potential waterlogging spots, which will be reviewed and addressed by the Chief Secretary.
Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj emphasized the need for proper drainage systems, as rainwater often flows into sewers, causing blockages. The Delhi Jal Board has been directed to deploy recycler machines in each of the 11 zones to manage large-scale blockages and to arrange contract labor for sewer duties.
Bharadwaj highlighted the importance of cross-departmental coordination, noting that many issues involve multiple departments such as irrigation and flood, NDMC, PWD, and DDA. A list of such cases will be continuously monitored to prevent waterlogging problems.
Residents can report waterlogging by calling the PWD control room at 1800110093 or by sending a message to the WhatsApp number 8130188222.
