Delhi on High Alert After Intelligence Warns of Possible IED Threats
Security has been intensified across Delhi after intelligence agencies flagged potential terror plots targeting key locations in the national capital
09-05-2026The national capital has been placed under heightened security surveillance after intelligence inputs indicated the possibility of improvised explosive device (IED) attacks at prominent and sensitive sites, according to official sources.
Acting on the alert, the Delhi Police ramped up security measures across strategic and high-traffic areas. Multiple checkpoints were set up, and thorough inspections were conducted in parts of the city considered vulnerable.
Security arrangements were particularly strengthened outside the Delhi unit office and national headquarters of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Police personnel were seen increasing barricading and carrying out detailed searches as a precautionary step.
Sources indicated that law enforcement and security forces deployed at prominent sites could themselves be possible targets.
The alert follows a recent crackdown by the Special Cell of Delhi Police, which dismantled a suspected terror-linked network allegedly connected to gangster-turned-terror operative Shahzad Bhatti. He is believed to be acting under the direction of Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Nine individuals were arrested in the operation.
During questioning, investigators reportedly discovered plans for targeted attacks within Delhi. Sources claimed that certain high-profile religious sites, including a well-known temple in the city, had been surveyed. Videos of these locations were allegedly shared with handlers based across the border.
The suspects were said to be planning attacks on police and paramilitary personnel stationed at one such site, intending to create widespread panic by opening fire.
Authorities also received information suggesting a grenade attack was being plotted against a busy roadside eatery on the Delhi–Sonipat highway, a location known for heavy daily crowds. The objective, sources said, was to cause significant casualties and disruption.
Reports further indicated that reconnaissance was conducted at a military facility in Hisar, with footage allegedly transmitted to foreign handlers. Some police establishments in Uttar Pradesh were also believed to be on the radar.
The latest warning comes months after law enforcement agencies uncovered a separate terror network allegedly linked to the Pakistan-based group Jaish-e-Mohammed. That investigation followed a devastating car explosion near the Red Fort on November 10 last year, which resulted in 15 fatalities and several injuries.
The blast exposed what officials described as a “white-collar” terror module, allegedly involving radicalised professionals, including individuals associated with Al Falah University in Faridabad, Haryana. Among those arrested were medical practitioners, students, and administrative staff accused of aiding suicide bomber Dr Umar Un Nabi.
Investigators revealed that nearly 2,900 kilograms of explosives were seized during the operation. The fatal explosion was reportedly carried out using an explosives-laden Hyundai i20 vehicle driven by the accused.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with enhanced surveillance and security checks in place to prevent any potential threats.
