Delhi experienced one of its wettest spells in June, with a record 228.1 mm of rain in the past 24 hours, leading to widespread waterlogging across the city. Between 2:30 am and 5:30 am, the capital received over 150 mm of rainfall.

The highest rainfall recorded in 24 hours at Safdarjung, Delhi's primary observatory, was 235.5 mm on June 28, 1936. AAP MLA Somnath Bharti noted that this was the second-highest June rainfall in 88 years. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that this is the first instance since 1966 that Delhi has seen over 228 mm of rain in a single day. Typically, Delhi receives 800 mm of rainfall throughout the monsoon season, but 25% of this total occurred within just 24 hours.

"The infrastructure isn't designed to handle such heavy rain," Bharti remarked, referring to the 1936 record of 235 mm in June.

Overflowing drains and severe waterlogging disrupted life in Delhi. Social media was flooded with visuals showing submerged roads and long traffic jams. Severe waterlogging on Minto Road led to vehicles being submerged, and trucks were also stranded at the Azad Market underpass.

Areas like Connaught Place and locations near several metro stations were heavily inundated. The crucial Ring Road was affected in both directions from Naraina to Moti Bagh due to waterlogging under the Dhaula Kuan flyover. Waterlogged roads also inconvenienced commuters in Noida and Ghaziabad.

At Delhi airport's Terminal 1, a portion of the roof collapsed on parked cars amid the heavy rain early Friday morning, resulting in one fatality and two injuries. Departures from Terminal 1 have been temporarily halted, and check-in counters closed for safety reasons.

The IMD forecasts cloudy skies with moderate to heavy rain and gusty winds for the next seven days in Delhi.
