Delhi Sees Spike in Dengue Cases with 401 New Infections
Delhi reports a surge in dengue cases, with over 1,630 infections this year, while malaria and chikungunya numbers also see an uptick
04-10-2024Delhi has witnessed a surge in dengue cases, with over 401 new infections recorded between September 22 and 28, according to official data cited by news agency PTI. Alongside dengue, there has also been a noticeable increase in malaria and chikungunya cases in the city.
As of September 28, the total number of dengue cases in Delhi for the year has reached 1,630. Data from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) shows that in September alone, 1,052 cases were reported. The city recorded nearly 300 new cases in the week from September 15 to 21, bringing the cumulative count to 651. The previous week, ending on September 14, saw 250 new cases.
The South Delhi region has been particularly affected, experiencing a significant rise in cases compared to the previous year. Malaria and chikungunya cases have also shown a considerable uptick.
Between September 22 and 28, Delhi reported 67 new malaria cases and 13 new chikungunya cases. So far this year, 430 malaria cases have been reported, up from 321 during the same period in 2023. Chikungunya cases have climbed to 55, compared to 24 in the corresponding period last year.
One death related to dengue has been reported this year — a 54-year-old patient succumbed to the illness at Lok Kalyan Hospital. In 2023, Delhi recorded 19 dengue-related fatalities.
