Delhi to Receive Light Rain; Kerala Faces Heavy Showers Alert
Delhi anticipates relief with light rainfall while Kerala braces for heavy showers as per alerts issued by the IMD, amid ongoing weather changes across India
23-06-2024Delhi is expected to see light rainfall on Sunday after enduring days of a severe heatwave, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). On Saturday, the city recorded a high of 39.4 degrees Celsius, slightly above average, and a low of 28.6 degrees Celsius. Rain on Friday brought some respite, with 4 mm recorded in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Saturday. The forecast for Sunday includes cloudy skies with light rain or drizzle, and temperatures between 30 and 40 degrees Celsius. The monsoon is anticipated to reach Delhi by June 30.
Kerala Braces for Heavy Rainfall
The IMD has issued a red alert for Malappuram and orange alerts for several other districts in Kerala for June 22. For Sunday, red alerts are in place for Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur, and orange alerts for Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, and Kasaragod. Red alerts indicate extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm in 24 hours, while orange alerts indicate very heavy rainfall between 11 cm and 20 cm.
Monsoon Advancements
The Southwest Monsoon is making its way through regions such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Bihar. The monsoon is expected to progress further into these areas, as well as East Uttar Pradesh, over the next three to four days.
Impact of Heatwave in Noida
Amid the ongoing heatwave, the Gautam Buddh Nagar health department has performed 93 autopsies in four days, receiving 18 more bodies on June 21. To manage the backlog at the mortuary, DNA sampling of unidentified bodies has commenced. The heatwave is forecasted to persist in West Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi until June 25, with relief expected thereafter.
Nationwide Rainfall Forecast
Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted in Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Kerala, Coastal and South Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Lakshadweep from June 23 to 26. Other regions expecting significant rainfall include Marathwada, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, southeast Rajasthan, West and East Madhya Pradesh, and the Northeast states of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, and Meghalaya.
