The ongoing turmoil surrounding Don 3 intensified this week after actor Ranveer Singh reportedly sought legal intervention against a non-cooperation directive issued by the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE).
The latest development comes days after the industry body announced action against the actor in connection with its dispute involving filmmakers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani of Excel Entertainment.
FWICE chief advisor Ashoke Pandit confirmed that the organisation had received a legal notice from Ranveer Singh. Following the notice, the federation decided to hold another media briefing in Mumbai to explain its position on the matter.
Although details of the legal communication have not been made public, the dispute has further intensified discussions within the film industry regarding the future of Don 3 and the relationship between actors, producers and industry associations.
The controversy began after FWICE issued a non-cooperation directive against Ranveer Singh. The federation alleged that the actor had not engaged with the organisation despite repeated attempts to discuss concerns raised by stakeholders connected to the project.
Responding to the directive, Ranveer Singh maintained a measured stance and declined to publicly discuss the issue. Through an official statement, the actor expressed respect for the film industry and everyone associated with the Don franchise, emphasising that professional disagreements should be handled privately and respectfully rather than through public exchanges.
FWICE later clarified that its action should not be viewed as an industry-wide ban. According to the federation, the directive only applies to workers and technicians affiliated with the organisation, while producers and others in the industry remain free to collaborate with the actor if they choose.
The move, however, triggered mixed reactions within Bollywood. Several industry voices questioned the effectiveness of such a directive and argued that disputes of this nature could ultimately affect the livelihoods of workers dependent on film productions.
Ranveer Singh also indicated in his communication to the federation that he did not believe FWICE was the appropriate platform for addressing the disagreement. He reiterated that he would not contribute to speculation or public debate surrounding the matter and preferred to remain focused on his professional commitments.
How the Don 3 Dispute Began
The roots of the controversy stretch back to August 2023, when Ranveer Singh was officially announced as the lead star of Don 3, succeeding legends Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, who had previously defined the iconic character.
While the announcement generated significant excitement, it also sparked debate among fans regarding the franchise's new direction.
Following the initial reveal, updates on the film became increasingly limited, leading to widespread speculation about delays and production-related challenges.
Industry reports later suggested that disagreements may have emerged over creative and logistical aspects of the project. Rumours circulated that concerns existed regarding script development, scheduling delays and differing artistic approaches to the character.
Some reports claimed that Ranveer preferred a darker and more intense interpretation of Don, while the filmmakers were reportedly inclined to maintain the tone established in previous films. Other reports suggested frustration over repeated delays and uncertainty surrounding the project's progress.
As speculation grew, reports surfaced that alternative casting options were being explored, fuelling rumours that Ranveer's association with the film could be in jeopardy.
The disagreement reportedly expanded beyond creative issues when claims emerged that Excel Entertainment had sought compensation for investments already made during the film's development phase. Reports indicated that substantial work had already been completed, including location scouting, travel arrangements and other pre-production activities.
According to Ashoke Pandit, the producers informed FWICE that considerable resources had been invested in preparing the project. He also claimed that Ranveer had been involved in discussions related to the script and promotional activities linked to the film's launch.
At present, the future of Don 3 remains uncertain. What was once one of Bollywood's most eagerly awaited projects has now become the centre of a complex industry dispute involving legal action, creative disagreements and competing claims from multiple parties.
With the matter now entering the legal arena, the next developments could play a crucial role in determining the fate of both the film and the ongoing standoff.
