Former President Donald Trump was unharmed after gunshots were fired near his Florida golf club, with the FBI treating the incident as an attempted assassination
16-09-2024Former U.S. President and 2024 Republican candidate Donald Trump was unharmed after gunshots were fired near his Florida golf club on Sunday, according to the U.S. Secret Service. The FBI is treating the incident as an "attempted assassination."
Secret Service agents reportedly opened fire on a man spotted with a firearm near the golf club shortly before 2 pm local time. The suspect, 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, fled the scene but was apprehended later in Martin County. His motive is still under investigation.
Trump, who was playing golf at the time of the incident, assured his supporters via email that he was safe and vowed, "I will never surrender."
The FBI confirmed they are investigating the incident, and authorities said the suspect was armed with an AK-47-style rifle and a GoPro camera. He dropped his weapon and fled after Secret Service agents fired at him. No injuries were reported.
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed on the situation, with both leaders expressing relief that Trump was unharmed. Biden condemned the violence, stating that political violence has no place in the U.S.
This marks the second assassination attempt on Trump in recent months, following a July rally in Pennsylvania where a bullet grazed his ear. Security measures around the former president have since been heightened.
Following the incident, Trump reassured his supporters, saying, "Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER!"
