A month after the passing of businessman and Karisma Kapoor’s former husband, Sunjay Kapur, a major legal row has emerged over the control of his massive ₹30,000 crore estate.

Allegations Over Ownership

As per a report by India.com, Sunjay’s mother, Rani Kapur, has asserted that she holds a controlling interest in the Sona Group, the family-run conglomerate. She has accused unnamed parties of attempting to seize the family’s legacy and stated clearly that she has not authorised anyone to act on her behalf within the group.

Adding another layer to the dispute, Dainik Jagran reported that actress Karisma Kapoor, who was previously married to Sunjay, may be pursuing a stake in his assets. However, there has been no official word from Karisma or her representatives on this matter.

Concerns Around Cause of Death

Questions have also been raised about the circumstances of Sunjay’s sudden death on June 12, initially reported as a result of cardiac arrest. Rani Kapur, through her lawyer, senior advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, suggested there might be more to the incident than publicly known.

“For her, as a mother, it is deeply distressing to see her son’s death brushed off as an accident or heart failure. The reality appears far more complex, and she will not rest until the truth is uncovered,” Gaggar said in a statement to ANI.

Legal Intervention Sought

Rani Kapur further claimed that she was pressured into signing certain documents shortly after Sunjay’s passing. She has now appealed for the cancellation of the Sona Group’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), which was slated to take place today, citing concerns over potential changes in leadership and governance. No legal case has been filed so far, but her legal team has indicated that they are keeping all options open.

Sunjay Kapur’s funeral was held on June 19 at Lodhi Road Crematorium in New Delhi, attended by close family and friends.
