Voters in 40 constituencies across Jammu and Kashmir are heading to the polls today in the third and final phase of the Assembly elections, held under tight security. The contest is crowded, with 415 candidates, including key figures like former Deputy Chief Ministers Tara Chand and Muzaffar Beig, vying for seats.
Of the 40 constituencies, 24 are in the Jammu division, while 16 are in Kashmir. Polling began early at 7 a.m. and will continue until 6 p.m.
Earlier voting phases took place on September 18 and 25, with voter turnout reported at 61% and 57.31%, respectively, according to the Election Commission of India.
Jammu Division
In Jammu division, 24 seats are up for grabs in districts like Jammu, Samba, Kathua, and Udhampur, predominantly Hindu-majority areas. These seats are crucial for the BJP, which aims to replicate its success from the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, where it led in 22 of the 24 assembly segments.
Meanwhile, the Congress is striving to reclaim its foothold, focusing on local issues such as smart electricity meters, property taxes, and allegations of exam irregularities. These concerns have resonated with voters who are calling for change.
Kashmir Division
In the Kashmir division, the spotlight is on three districts in North Kashmir: Bandipora, Kupwara, and Baramulla. High-profile candidates such as Engineer Rashid and Sajad Lone are in the fray. Lone, leader of the People's Conference, is contesting from Handwara and Kupwara, while Rashid is defending his seat in Langate.
The BJP has centered its campaign around its role in abrogating Article 370 and taking action against separatists. How these issues play out with voters in the politically sensitive region remains to be seen.
