Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a prime suspect in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks and one of India’s most wanted fugitives, is finally being brought back to face justice. After exhausting every legal option to block his extradition, Rana boarded a special flight from the United States and is expected to arrive in Delhi this afternoon, according to sources.

Upon arrival, the 64-year-old will be taken into custody by officials from the National Investigation Agency (NIA). A team comprising members from both the NIA and the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) is accompanying him on the flight. Authorities said he will likely appear before a court in Delhi soon after landing, though Mumbai police have yet to be formally notified of any potential transfer to the city.

Rana faces multiple charges including conspiracy, waging war against the Indian government, murder, and forgery. He has also been charged under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

A Canadian national of Pakistani descent, Rana was living in Chicago at the time of the attacks. He is believed to have played a significant role in supporting the deadly assault that left 166 people dead. David Coleman Headley, a Pakistani-American who was a key conspirator in the attack, testified that Rana had provided logistical and financial support for the operation. Headley had earlier visited Mumbai posing as an employee of Rana’s immigration services firm to survey potential targets.

Rana was arrested by the FBI in Chicago in 2009, a year after the attacks, on charges related to a foiled plot to attack a Danish newspaper and for aiding Lashkar-e-Taiba, the Pakistan-based group behind the Mumbai attacks. In 2011, he was convicted in the U.S. for conspiracy and has since been held in a Los Angeles detention facility.

Rana’s extradition gained fresh momentum earlier this year when former U.S. President Donald Trump, during a joint appearance with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House, confirmed that his administration had cleared the way for his transfer to India.

“I’m proud to announce that we’ve authorized the extradition of one of the key planners—one of the world’s most dangerous men involved in the horrific 2008 Mumbai attacks. He will now face justice in India,” Trump had said.

The three-day siege in Mumbai targeted iconic landmarks including luxury hotels, a major railway station, and a Jewish cultural center, plunging the city into chaos. The Indian government maintains that Lashkar-e-Taiba masterminded the attack, though Pakistan has consistently denied any role in the incident.
