Former Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and BJP Rajya Sabha MP Dinesh Sharma has been appointed Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Rashtrapati Bhavan announced late Saturday night.

Sharma, 62, will take over from Admiral D K Joshi (retd), who has held the position since October 8, 2017.

In an official communication, the Rashtrapati Bhavan said President Droupadi Murmu had appointed Dr Dinesh Sharma as the Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory. The appointment will take effect from the day he formally assumes office.

Following the announcement, Sharma thanked President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the BJP's central leadership for entrusting him with the new responsibility.

In a post on X, the senior BJP leader also expressed gratitude to party leaders, supporters, friends and well-wishers for their continued encouragement and blessings.

Describing the appointment as more than just an official position, Sharma said the responsibility represented a commitment towards upholding the Constitution, serving the country and working for the people.

He said he would carry out his duties with sincerity, honesty and complete dedication, while seeking the continued trust and support of those who had stood by him.

Sharma has had a long political career in Uttar Pradesh and served as one of the state's deputy chief ministers. He is currently a member of the Rajya Sabha and also serves as its vice chairperson. His term in the Upper House is scheduled to conclude on November 25.

With his appointment as Lieutenant Governor, Sharma will now take charge of the strategically significant Andaman and Nicobar Islands Union Territory.
