In a notable effort to promote cultural heritage and wellness, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has announced that entry to all centrally protected monuments, including the famed Taj Mahal, will be free on World Yoga Day, June 21. This initiative is designed to increase awareness of yoga and its benefits.

Superintending Archaeologist Dr. Rajkumar Patel stated that according to Rule 6 of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Rules, 1959, visitors will have free access to these historic sites on Yoga Day. However, he mentioned that an additional fee of Rs 200 would still be required for those wishing to visit the main dome of the Taj Mahal.

"While the general entry will be free, the special fee for accessing the main dome remains unchanged," Dr. Patel clarified.

In addition to the Yoga Day initiative, the ASI has also announced special provisions for Eid celebrations.

On June 17, Namazis will be granted free entry to the Taj Mahal for two hours to perform their prayers. This highlights the ASI's inclusive approach towards facilitating cultural and religious practices at these historical sites.

Local tourism stakeholders have warmly welcomed this decision. Prahalad Agarwal, President of the Agra Tourist Welfare Chamber, commended the ASI's initiative, emphasizing its potential to boost tourism in Agra.

"This is a commendable decision by the ASI, reflecting a thoughtful approach to increasing tourism possibilities in Agra. Free access to our heritage sites on significant days not only promotes cultural appreciation but also attracts more visitors, benefiting the local economy," Agarwal said.

He added that such initiatives align perfectly with Agra's broader tourism strategy, aiming to integrate wellness tourism with the city's rich historical and cultural attractions.

"Yoga Day celebrations at our monuments provide a unique opportunity for visitors to connect with India's ancient traditions in the backdrop of its most iconic landmarks," Agarwal noted.

Local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and tour operators, are preparing for an influx of tourists. The free entry initiative is expected to draw large crowds, both domestic and international, enhancing Agra's reputation as a premier tourist destination.
