Free Republic Day Breakfast at Shilpa Shetty’s Bandra Restaurant Triggers Online Debate on ‘Freebie Culture’

Long queues outside AmmaKai on Republic Day drew praise and criticism alike, igniting a social media argument over generosity, privilege and India’s growing fixation with freebies

A Republic Day gesture by AmmaKai, a Bandra-based restaurant co-owned by actor Shilpa Shetty, has unexpectedly turned into a flashpoint for a wider social debate. To mark the national holiday, the eatery announced complimentary breakfast for visitors — an offer that drew huge crowds even before the doors opened.

Videos shared by influencers and diners quickly went viral, showing people lining up for hours outside the restaurant in the early morning, patiently waiting for a free meal. While many hailed the initiative as a thoughtful celebration of the day, others were far less impressed.

Online reactions soon split into two camps. Supporters applauded the restaurant for giving back and saw nothing wrong with people accepting a free offering. Critics, however, questioned the mindset of those in line, especially after some users claimed that many waiting appeared to come from affluent neighbourhoods and lived in upscale housing.

Several social media users argued that the enthusiasm for a free plate of food reflected a deeper cultural issue rather than a one-day promotion. One widely shared comment suggested that when people with financial means queue up for freebies, it highlights why handout culture continues to flourish. Others echoed the sentiment, saying responsibility lies not only with institutions that offer freebies but also with individuals who rush to claim them.

Another section of users pushed back, saying no one should be shamed for accepting free food and that judging people based on appearances or assumptions about wealth was unfair. They argued that generosity should not come with moral scrutiny, and a free meal on a national holiday should be taken at face value.

The discussion soon moved beyond the restaurant itself, evolving into a broader conversation on entitlement, privilege and how society views “free” offerings. Many questioned whether such reactions say more about social attitudes than the initiative itself.

AmmaKai by Bastian is known as a premium South Indian dining destination with a focus on Mangalorean cuisine. The brand also operates a high-end rooftop restaurant at Kohinoor Square in Dadar, offering a global menu that includes Asian, Californian and European dishes.

Although the complimentary breakfast was limited to Republic Day alone, the scenes outside the restaurant — and the reactions that followed — continue to fuel online debates about social behaviour and India’s complicated relationship with freebies.
