India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has defended captain Rohit Sharma against criticism over his recent performances, asserting that the team values his aggressive approach over pure statistics. Following India’s commanding victory over Australia in the Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final in Dubai, Gambhir dismissed concerns about Rohit’s future in international cricket.
Highlighting Rohit's fearless batting, Gambhir stated that his intent at the top of the order sends a strong message to the dressing room.
Though Rohit has amassed just 84 runs in three tournament matches, he has consistently set the tone for the team—mirroring his role in the ODI World Cup 2023 and the T20 World Cup 2024.
"As we approach the Champions Trophy final, there's nothing more to say. When a captain bats with such intensity, it signals to the team that we play with fearlessness and courage. While some judge performances through statistics, we measure them by impact," Gambhir remarked after India's emphatic win.
"You evaluate based on numbers and averages, but as a coach and team, we don't focus on those. What matters is the captain leading by example, and Rohit is doing just that," he added.
A Shift in Rohit's Approach
Once known for his ability to convert starts into big hundreds, Rohit has adopted a more aggressive approach since the 2023 World Cup, focusing on attacking bowlers early rather than anchoring innings. Despite criticism following a disappointing Test season in 2024-25, he responded with a century in the home ODI series against England earlier this year.
While he hasn’t capitalized on his starts in the Champions Trophy, his aggressive play has relieved pressure on India’s middle order, especially on the sluggish surfaces in Dubai.
India cruised to victory in the semi-final, chasing down 265 against Australia in 48.1 overs. Mohammed Shami led the bowling attack, restricting Australia to a sub-par total, while Virat Kohli’s composed 84, alongside contributions from Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya, and KL Rahul, ensured a smooth chase.
"We Haven’t Played a Perfect Game Yet": Gambhir
Despite India’s unbeaten run, Gambhir stressed that there is still room for improvement. He praised the team’s fielding performance but maintained that the team must strive for perfection in the final.
"In international cricket, there's always something to refine—whether in batting, bowling, or fielding. We haven't played the perfect game yet. Hopefully, we can achieve that in the final," Gambhir stated.
"Improvement is key. We aim to be relentless on the field yet remain humble off it."
India will now face the winner of the New Zealand vs. South Africa semi-final, set to take place in Lahore on March 5. The final will be played on Sunday.
