George Clooney has signalled a clear change in the kind of roles he plans to take on, saying he has consciously decided to step away from on-screen romances—especially those involving much younger co-stars.
The 63-year-old actor revealed that the decision followed a candid conversation with his wife, Amal Clooney, about age and how he wants his career to evolve. Clooney said he no longer feels comfortable playing romantic leads opposite women decades younger than him and joked that he is done “kissing girls” in films.
Drawing inspiration from Hollywood legend Paul Newman, Clooney explained that he wants to age on screen with honesty and dignity. He noted that while he still feels fit and active, time inevitably catches up with everyone, and pretending otherwise on screen doesn’t make sense to him anymore.
This shift is not entirely new. Earlier this year, Clooney had already hinted that he was moving away from romantic films altogether. He has said he has no interest in competing with actors in their 20s and would rather make space for the next generation of leading men instead of chasing roles that no longer feel authentic.
Looking back on his early career, Clooney has often spoken with humour about learning the ropes in Hollywood. He once recalled being corrected by a director during a kissing scene, who felt Clooney’s approach didn’t translate well on camera—even though the actor insisted it worked just fine in real life.
Most recently, Clooney appeared in Jay Kelly, a dramedy that delves into fame, family tensions and personal introspection. Directed by Noah Baumbach, the film had its premiere at the 2025 Venice International Film Festival, where it received an enthusiastic response, including a lengthy standing ovation.
As Clooney redefines his screen persona, his focus appears to be shifting toward more character-driven stories that reflect where he is in life—leaving behind romantic tropes in favour of roles that feel more grounded and genuine.
