A significant Microsoft outage wreaked havoc globally, disrupting computer systems, grounding flights, and affecting banks, stock exchanges, payment systems, and emergency services. About six hours after the initial reports, Microsoft tweeted that "Multiple services are continuing to see improvements in availability as our mitigation actions progress."

Later, Microsoft announced that the "underlying cause for a global outage has been fixed," but residual effects were still impacting some Office 365 apps and services. CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity firm, confirmed a fix for a bug causing the global IT outage, which affected airports, banks, and media worldwide.

Both Microsoft and CrowdStrike ruled out a cyber attack, attributing the outage to a "recent update received in the product." The disruptions persisted even after Microsoft's announcement of the fix.

Disruptions Across India

In India, the outage caused significant disruptions in flight operations, payment systems, and trading. Airlines such as IndiGo, Akasa Airlines, and SpiceJet faced booking and check-in issues, leading to flight delays and long queues at airports. The central government is in discussions with Microsoft to resolve the issue, and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is expected to issue an advisory.

Airline Challenges

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines was severely affected, making it "impossible" to handle flights and leading to the suspension of most operations. Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, one of Europe's busiest hubs, experienced flight disruptions. Berlin Airport halted all flights due to a technical fault, causing delays in check-ins.

In the US, airlines including American Airlines, Delta, and United grounded all flights. Spanish authorities reported a "computer incident" at all airports, and Ryanair warned passengers of potential disruptions. Edinburgh Airport in Britain faced issues with automated boarding pass scanners, and Turkish Airlines had problems with ticketing, check-in, and reservations due to the global technical issue.

Impact on Financial Markets

Stock exchanges in various countries experienced operational disruptions. The London Stock Exchange was affected, and brokerage firms like Nuvama, Edelweiss, and Motilal Oswal faced technical outages, causing traders in India to report issues.

Payment systems worldwide, including in India, were also impacted. The Paris Olympics 2024 IT operations faced disruptions just a week before the Games, prompting the organizing committee to activate contingency plans.

Media Outages

The outage also affected news services globally. Britain's Sky News could not broadcast live TV, with viewers receiving apologies for the interruption.

The Microsoft outage had widespread effects, causing significant disruptions across various sectors and highlighting the interconnected nature of global digital infrastructure.
