Thousands of people from the Indian diaspora protested across more than 130 cities in 25 countries on Sunday, calling for justice in the wake of the recent rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. The demonstrations initially took place in Asia, including Japan, Australia, Taiwan, and Singapore, and then spread to European cities and over 60 locations in the US.
The protests are part of a broader movement in India, which has seen continued demonstrations following the tragic death of the 31-year-old postgraduate student of chest medicine on August 9.
Authorities have arrested a suspect along with the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, where the victim was studying.
In Stockholm, Sweden, a significant number of protesters, predominantly women dressed in black, gathered at Sergels Torg square. They sang Bengali songs and held signs demanding accountability for the crime and improved safety for Indian women.
Dipti Jain, a British citizen and former student of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, organized the protests. Jain previously led a demonstration in the UK last month.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the case on Monday. Despite stricter laws introduced after the 2012 Delhi gang rape case, activists argue that the Kolkata incident underscores ongoing issues with sexual violence against women.
