A tragic train accident occurred in Odisha's Cuttack on Sunday when the Bengaluru-Kamakhya Express derailed, resulting in one fatality and injuries to eight passengers. The train, which was en route from Bengaluru to Kamakhya station in Assam’s Guwahati, derailed near Nergundi railway station.

District Magistrate Dattatraya Bhausaheb Shinde confirmed the casualty figures, stating, "One person has lost their life, and eight others sustained injuries requiring medical referral. They have been shifted to appropriate healthcare facilities. An inquiry into the derailment is underway."

According to Ashok Kumar Mishra, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of East Coast Railway, the derailment took place at 11:54 AM near Manguli, affecting eleven coaches of the SMVT Bengaluru-Kamakhya AC Express.

Emergency response teams, including personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Odisha Fire Service, swiftly arrived at the scene to conduct rescue and relief operations under the supervision of senior railway officials. Restoration work was initiated immediately to clear the affected track.

To assist stranded passengers, the Railways arranged for a relief train. Additionally, three other trains—Dhauli Express, Neelachal Express, and Purulia Express—were diverted due to the disruption.

Helpline numbers were issued to provide assistance to affected passengers and their families: 8455885999 (Bhubaneswar) and 8991124238 (Cuttack). "A control room has been set up to manage the situation, and we will soon release passenger details," added CPRO Mishra.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma provided updates regarding passengers from the state, confirming that two individuals, Willson Digal from Udalguri and Amiran Nisha from Baksa, sustained injuries but are in stable condition. He assured that his office remains in contact with Odisha authorities and the Railways for further developments.
