Hardoi School Row Goes Viral After Principal-Parent Clash Over Notebooks
A heated exchange at a private school in Hardoi has sparked debate over alleged pressure on parents to buy additional study material
27-04-2026A tense altercation between a school principal and a parent in Uttar Pradesh’s Hardoi district has triggered widespread discussion online, after a video of the confrontation circulated on social media. The episode has revived concerns about private institutions allegedly compelling families to purchase specific notebooks and academic supplies.
The incident occurred on April 24 at Sunbeam School in the Civil Lines locality. In the widely shared clip, principal Mamta Mishra is seen arguing sharply with a parent, Neelam Verma, in the presence of others. The footage was reportedly captured by another parent and first posted in a school WhatsApp group before gaining traction across various platforms.
According to Verma, the disagreement began when she visited the school to collect her daughter Alisha, a UKG student. She stated that she had already purchased the required textbooks and materials but was later told to buy four extra notebooks costing approximately Rs 1,200 directly from the school.
Verma alleged that her daughter stopped receiving homework assignments due to the missing notebooks, prompting her to approach the principal and request a brief extension to arrange the purchase.
She claimed that her appeal for 15 days’ time was rejected and that the principal used derogatory remarks, allegedly referring to her as “illiterate” and “uncultured,” and warned that her child’s name could be removed from the school rolls.
Following the confrontation, Verma lodged a complaint with the District Magistrate through the Integrated Grievance Redressal System (IGRS), Uttar Pradesh’s online public grievance portal.
Principal Mamta Mishra has refuted the accusations. In a statement shared on Facebook, she contended that the parent had been pressing for a reduction in school fees. Mishra said the disagreement happened on a day when the school was conducting a vaccination programme and claimed she had asked the parent to discuss the issue later.
She acknowledged that her tone may have been stern but maintained that the situation was not presented in full context. Mishra also noted that the monthly fee for primary classes stands at Rs 1,300, questioning whether it was excessive.
The video has drawn strong reactions from parents in the region, many of whom have voiced apprehensions about schools allegedly mandating purchases of expensive materials from designated sources.
Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA) Dr Ajit Singh confirmed that an initial inquiry has been initiated. A three-member panel has been assigned to examine the matter, and further steps will be determined after reviewing whether any rules, including provisions under the Right to Education Act, were breached.
As the investigation proceeds, the episode has placed the school under public scrutiny and reignited a broader discussion about fairness, transparency and accountability in private education.
